Injury Prevention
An injury in junior athletics can be as debilitating mentally as it is physically. I have watched many young athletes injure themselves because of poor conditioning and lack of, or improper warm-up.
With this in mind, we have created an injury prevention program for elementary school girls with the goal of arming them with the necessary information and skills to help prevent injury. this program will cover the three important areas of stretching, balance and strength.
We are working with Paula Buckley, a personal trainer in the Woodstock, VT area, and have designed an age specific injury prevention plan for young girls in the 3rd – 6th grades. This is a pilot program, now entering its second session will include a new balance component.
These programs will span the shoulder seasons of the popular sports, between Fall/Winter and Winter/Spring. As the program develops and based on interest, we will include a maintenance element during the actual sports season.
The emphasis of this program is in teaching the proper alignment and
proper technique of a series of exercises that the girls will learn at an early age, usually before they are most susceptible to the major ACL injuries. As they reach puberty, they will be in the habit of regularly completing these exercises properly and will have built up the strength and conditioning to help prevent the serious injury.
